Abyanga or oil massage is to be done daily, more so if work involves physical strain such as travelling or excessive muscular strain.
Oil must be applied to those parts which are under strain in daily work, e.g. for runners; more to leg, for weight lifters; to back, people work under sun; to head and leg; main principle being to protect those parts which are involved in daily work.
Quantity - In daily use quantity is such that it forms a very thin layer on the body and not a glistening coating. Approximately 15ml
Oil - selecting oil is dependent on season, place and work, if medicated then it should be natural to that place.
Poorva karma (pre condition): - Abyanga should be done before exercise if daily work is in natural environment and to those persons who use a/c or fan or any condition where sweating is prevented then oil massage should be done after exercise. And it should be done in empty stomach and early morning i.e. before 7.30am. Eating anything before or after oil massage, till bath should be avoided and previous night food should be consumed before 8.30pm.
Procedure: - Massage should be done above downwards with reasonable pressure not too hard not too soft); starting from face downwards Abyanga is to be avoided if person has indigestion, fever, any disease related to head and neck, vomiting, and Diarrhoea.
Care should be taken during pregnancy.

For children - same as elders
Acts on - Diseases of skin, nervous system, heart and circulation, intestine, reproduction, bones, sense organs and prevents age related diseases like Parkinson. Specially oil (medicated ghee) application to head action on Parkinson
